My Philosophy of Work

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process between a client and their provider. A counselor can facilitate a client’s work and tangible results are grounded in the client’s own practice of self reflection and behavioral change in their own world. A client can expect that they would make progress on their goals by virtue of how much they practice what they learn in therapy. A good fit between the needs of a client and the input from clinician can make all the difference and results will vary based on a client’s engagement!

Are you taking new clients?

I do take new clients from time to time. However, my practice stays quite full and I am typically booked up about 6 weeks out. My practice is not set up to take new clients on an urgent basis.

Do you take my insurance?

I have been an in-network provider for a select few insurance plans in the past and you may still find my name on some provider panel lists.  However, I expect to phase out my in-network participation soon and I will not be working with insurance panels on behalf of any new clients. I have been an in-network provider for a select few insurance plans in the past and you may still find my name on some provider panel lists.  However, I expect to phase out my in-network participation soon and I will not be working with insurance panels on behalf of any new clients.

As of 2020, new clients who have insurance benefits may choose to pursue reimbursement through their policies for their expenses in my practice.  The information necessary for out of network reimbursement is readily available through my patient portal.

How much do your services cost and do you accept fees on a sliding scale?

You can find a schedule of my <fees for service> here. I facilitate time limited psychoeducational seminars that provide information and support to motivated clients at reduced cost. You can find the description of my <psychoeducational seminars> here. I am not in a position to accept new clients on a sliding scale. You can find a list of <sliding scale resources> in Austin here.

Which issues do you work with and what is your style as a provider?

I support folks looking to strengthen relationships, manage moods and achieve their goals. I am pretty interactive during sessions, asking clarifying questions nudging clients to consider patterns and potential blind spots. I encourage clients to keep their goals in mind and track their engagement in addressing their issues. I often suggest experiments for clients to try outside of session. I can be quite direct and challenging though I also appreciate a good laugh and a sense of humor because life can be pretty dark and heavy at times.

What training/experience do you have and what is your theoretical orientation?

I earned an undergraduate degree in psychology and a graduate degree in clinical social work both of which from the University of Texas at Austin. I have been in practice as a licensed clinician since 1995 and volunteered as a peer counselor prior to graduation. You can find a synopsis of my <practice experience> here. Since graduation I have continued to study a variety of theoretical perspectives including attachment theory, internal family systems, dialectical therapy and adaptive information processing/EMDR.

I would like to explore options for working with you, what next?

If you would like explore the possibility of working with me, please feel free to email at rdavenport@earthlink.net or send an encrypted message through my patient portal <Therapy Appointments/Find A Therapist> here. If you prefer voice mail, the number to reach me is 512-801-8353.

Please note, it is not necessary to fill out all the forms or personal data through Therapy Appointments for the initial contact with me. Additionally, the ‘make an appointment’ feature of my portal has been deactivated as I prefer to manage my schedule personally.

I have a new client interview process: after an initial phone or email screening, we schedule an appointment to meet in person where we discuss goals for a person’s work in therapy, I explain how my practice works and we explore whether my style is a good fit for that client. Once we agree to work together, we collect all the personal data, psychosocial history, develop your goals for your work and collaborate around initial number of sessions in my practice.
